Back of the House of Jose  de Obaldia

With a touch of history and mystery, Barrio Bolívar is a old town of Chiriqui. With its ancient stone roads, earth block shacks and a very quiet environment, the neighborhood has its origins from the founding of David in 1602 by Juan Lopez Sequeira.

It was known as Barrio El Peligro because people told scary stories that happened in there like apparitions of Father Hollow, La Silampa, and Cadejo or about The Sneak, for that reason it received this name. It is precisely in that place where the first public Institutions in the province and the homes of wealthy families appeared in the mid-nineteenth century.

The sidewalk
The Vereda de la Educación Rafael Benítez Palacio, recently built, with splendor enhances the cultural charm of this small historic town that is located near to the center of David. The small sidewalk is a connection between the house of Jose Domingo de Obaldía (founder of Chiriqui in 1849 and second President of the Republic of Panama) before it was a museum (now under renovation) and the Cathedral San José de David (1892), both historical monuments. In the center of its structure lie original rocks of the road for almost two centuries ago and two arcs made of stones greet to the visitors.  Gardens, streetlights, benches, small cobblestone streets and colonial style with historical reviews are elements which define its design.

The Cathedral
On the other hand there is the Cathedral of San Jose de David, which was originally built in 1837, and the tower is all that remains of it, but it is recognized as the date for his blessing on December 7th in 1891. The tower was the setting for the thousand days’ war (1899-1902) between the Liberal and Conservative parties. The tower has 8 ceiling windows and a balcony decorated with shells and on its top stands a cross. The church inside is a canvas of images that represent scenes from the life of Christ. Every Sunday, their bells ring to call the inhabitants to participate in the celebration of mass.
The Ancient Police Station

Another place you can visit is the police station located in front of Plaza Bolivar's Park in honor of Simon Bolivar, built about 1860. Inside the barracks there is a small room that holds photographs and some weapons used in the thousand days’ war and Coto's war between Panama and Costa Rica (1921). You can also visit   La Casona Museum, Gallegos Foundation, House of Culturama, among others.

You will be able to admire signs pointing the ancient names of the streets of the neighborhood. It is definitely an antique environment that provides comfort to visitors and it makes memorial and special to those who want to keep in mind those days that remember the first steps of the city, from its own population, the students and tourists.
